SEMINARS are presented for Sandycove residents. These are information sessions specifically focusing on the interests of Seniors and retired folks. When scheduled they are normally held the 3rd Monday of the month at the SPOKE They are generally well attended and generate a number of questions about our community and life style. New residents may sign up at the Seminar where membership information is available. Plan now to attend.

IDENTITY THEFT & SCAMS, May 15, 2017 presented by Brock Godfrey, Canadian Anti Fraud Centre (PhoneBusters)

CANADIAN HEARING SOCIETY, April 24th, 2017 – presented by Cathy O’Connor, Hearing Aid Counsellor

CRIMESTOPPERS, March 20th, 2017 at the Spoke from 1-3pm – The session will be presented by Ken Simpson and will cover critical areas such as number of arrests, cases cleared, chargers laid, anonymous tips, how to use the tip line and much more.

Living with DIABETES, February 13th, 2017 – presented by Ashley Spegel and Jessica Drummond. Topics being covered are Risk factors, Diagnostic criteria, complications, management and Treatment.

100 YEAR LIFESTYLE – January 17th, 2017 – was presented by Dr Mark Kohut, Alcona Chiropractic. Topics included why we live so long, how chiropractic care can help you get there in style, how to build your own health care team, tips for exercise and high energy at any age and the importance of support systems as we age.

HEALTHY HEARTS, Monday, November 21st, 2016 – 1pm at the Spoke – was presented by Joel Seymour, Healthy Hearts Specialist, Cardiac Rehab program, YMCA Simcoe/Muskoka.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD, October 17th, 2016 – all about proper footwear and foot care to protect against falling. This was presented by Lori Ververs, a Kinesiologist with the VON.

TRAVEL INSURANCE, September 19th, 2016 – presented by CAA on why and how to obtain Travel Insurance. Talked about filling out forms , claims, and definitions of existing and stable conditions.

POLICE ACADEMY the South Simcoe Police recently held a 6 session Police Academy here in Sandycove and was well attended by about 30 residents – GREAT session which walked us through the many aspects of policing and introduced us to a number of local police officers. It was considered a success and then further during July the South Simcoe Police held a Community Policing meeting where there was about 75 residents attending.. Community Policing and it’s benefits is being introduced to Sandycove Acres and the surrounding area.

SAFE DRIVING, May 16th, 2016 AL’s Driving School talked about new laws re crosswalks, pulling over and slowing down for emergency vehicles, the 80+ drivers test and how to prepare

PET WELL BEING, April 18th, 2016 – Dr Christy Inglis, Chiropractor discussed dog bone structure and how and why to keep them young and healthy.

SURVIVOR – SANDYCOVE ACRES, November 16th, 2015 presented by Sharon Raycraft, Chair Emergency Preparedness Team, and discussed how best tp prepare for an emergency when its not safe to leave home (ie: Chemical Spill)

LEASES/HOME REGISTRATION/WILLS & POWER OF ATTORNEY, October 19th, 2015 – presented by Deborah Wall-Armstrong and primarily addressed Wills and estate laws.

FIRE PREVENTION/FIRE EXTINGUISHER USE, September 21st, 2015 – presented by the Innisfil Fire Dept- talked about laws regarding fire.CO2 detectors and laws regarding new builds.

LIVING SAFELY IN SANDYCOVE ACRES, September 15th 2014 – presented by Sharon Raycraft, Chairperson of the Emergency Preparedness Committee talked about how to protect yourself and your home in our community.

GARDENING SEMINAR, April 21st 2014 – “The Flowers that bloom in the Spring” was presented by our guest speaker Sam Guido from Kell’s Garden Centre in Innisfil.

PET TRAINING SEMINAR – Monday, March 17th 2014 – are we really going to the dogs?? Come learn from the expert – Top Dog K9 Services from Barrie will be presenting.

MEAL PREPARATION SEMINAR – February 24th 2014 – how to create tasty, easy to make and budget friendly ways to get more healthy foods into a day-to-day living with a SENIORS FOCUS. This session presented by Rebecca Toner, Registered Dietician, Barrie Community Health Centre.

DOWNSIZING SEMINAR – November 18th 2013 – Downsizing is part of life in Sandycove and as we get older – speaker told us how best to downsize. Speaker was Trudi Brooks, From Customized Transitions and Organizing Solutions.

HOSPITAL to HOME SEMINAR – October 21st 2013 – RVH & local CCAC (Community Care Access Centre) folks described the Hospital to Home process – they described the “HOME FIRST” process and your options and how best to handle them – providing you with health information you need please go to www.nsmhealthlink.ca or call 310-2222 or 1-888-435-6086

TOURISM SEMINAR – Monday, September 16th 2013 The first seminar of the year drew a great crowd of interested residents to hear a special presentation about TRAVEL & TOURISM presented by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism. Lots of info about great places to go, great prices and special interest trips long and short and all within Ontario.

GARDENING SEMINAR – Monday April 15th 2013 Judith Rogers, Master Gardener once again made a great presentation and discussed the finer points of gardening. The focus of this session was “Shade Gardening”. Judith writes regularly for the Innisfil Scope on Gardening tips. Please click on her photo to link to her web site and get more tips on Gardening. KEEPING SAFE – Monday March 18th.2013 – This special presentation was made by the South Simcoe Police Community Services Branch and covered numerous topics such as staying safe in parking lots, shopping malls, on the highway and of course at home, as well as the “lock it or lose it” campaign. They also touched on some of the scams and risks as they relate to home safety – people selling/canvassing at the door and trying to get our personal information. This seminar was open to everyone and attracted a good audience of about 28 interested residents. The true value of these sessions was in the Q & A that followed and was great.

FUNERAL PLANNING – Monday January 21st 2013 Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home once again returned to present WHAT YOUR EXECUTOR NEEDS TO KNOW. This was an excellent presentation made by representatives from the Steckley-Gooderham funeral home, one of the largest and most respected in Simcoe County. Attendance was poor due to weather and illness but the session was very informal and the light presentation was easy to to understand all the death benefits that an executor may be eligible for. There were also cookies, handouts and useful checklists available.

October 15th 2012 Innisfil HYDRO returned and made a great presentation with “trivia” questions that kept the 70+ folks in attendance guessing and a few folks even won some very nice prizes. Thanks to those that came to learn about how to lower your energy use and manage your energy costs.

November 19th 2012 Innisfil Public Library has a number of programs available and free for residents of Innisfil.
